ThisAbles
IKEA Israel2019
ThisAbles is a 2019 product line (3D-printable add-ons) for IKEA Israel, created by McCann Tel Aviv.
Why it works
Accessibility shipped as a download. Furniture adapted for disabled people typically costs around twice as much as standard pieces, so IKEA Israel, working with the non-profits Milbat and Access Israel and McCann Tel Aviv, designed 13 add-ons that fit existing IKEA products — an oversized lamp switch, legs that raise a couch, and more — and released them free of charge: available in store, or as files anyone could download and 3D-print, with installation videos and a form for suggesting new ones. The idea began with a McCann Tel Aviv copywriter who has cerebral palsy and wanted to make his own sofa taller and easier to get out of. It won the Health & Wellness Grand Prix at Cannes 2019 and a D&AD Black Pencil. It is studied as inclusive design delivered as a business action: instead of an ad saying everyone is welcome, a product change that made it true, built on the company's own catalogue.
Techniques
- Purpose and cause Designs free add-ons that adapt existing furniture for disabled people, making inclusion a product change rather than a slogan.
- Participation Anyone can download the files and 3D-print the parts at home, or suggest new add-ons through a form.
