The line
Give someone the Christmas they've been dreaming of.
Why it works
The peak of the modern Christmas-ad genre John Lewis invented. A boy's best friend — a CGI penguin named Monty — grows visibly lonely until Christmas morning reveals both the gift (a penguin companion) and the truth: Monty was a toy, animated by a child's imagination all along. Launched in November 2014, it trended worldwide within an hour, sold out its toy line, and delivered documented business results rare for emotional brand film: a record £175m sales week, £141m in incremental revenue, and a 7.44:1 profit return per pound spent. It is studied as the definitive case for long-term emotional brand-building in retail — and it won both the Cannes Film Craft Grand Prix (2015) and the Creative Effectiveness Grand Prix (2016), the industry's craft and commerce prizes for the same piece of work.
Techniques
- Pathos Tugs at Christmas sentiment through a boy's tender bond with his lonely penguin, attaching that warmth to giving someone the perfect gift.
- Storytelling Builds an arc around Monty's growing loneliness, then turns on Christmas morning when the gift arrives and he is revealed as a toy brought alive by imagination.
