The line

Red Bull gives you wings.

Why it works

The logical endpoint of "Red Bull gives you wings": the brand funded an actual edge-of-space program. On October 14, 2012, Felix Baumgartner rode a helium balloon to 128,100 feet and jumped, breaking the sound barrier in freefall while more than 8 million people watched the YouTube livestream — the largest concurrent live audience in the platform's history, carried additionally on 40+ networks in 50 countries. There was no ad: the event was the advertising, the logo on the suit the only copy. It is studied as the apex of brand-as-publisher strategy — a marketing department operating like a space agency and a broadcaster at once — and the definitive proof that audiences will voluntarily watch marketing if the content clears a high enough bar.

Techniques

  • Demonstration Makes the 'gives you wings' slogan literal with a real edge-of-space jump, so the event itself is the proof rather than an ad about it.
  • Transfer Borrows the awe of a record-breaking leap from the stratosphere, with the logo on the suit as the only copy.
