The line

Bud... weis... er.

Why it works

Three frogs on a swamp log croak one syllable each — "Bud," "weis," "er" — until the croaks sync into the brand name. That's the whole ad. Debuting at Super Bowl XXIX in 1995, it is studied as an extreme proof that brand recall needs no message at all: no product story, no benefit, just sound design, comic timing and a name made physical. The frogs became recurring characters (later joined by the scheming lizards Louie and Frank), one of the first cases of a Super Bowl spot spawning a running serialized campaign, and the croak entered the culture the way catchphrases usually do — except nobody in the ad ever says a word.

Techniques

  • Mascots and characters Three swamp frogs croaking one syllable each become recurring brand characters whose only job is to say the name.
  • Humour Comic timing does the work as the croaks stumble and finally sync into the brand name, with no product story at all.
