Why it works
A young man drops a coin into a Coca-Cola vending machine and the camera follows it into an animated kingdom inside: pig-helicopters ferry the bottle, a gold-toothed capper catapults the cap on, love puppies seal it with a kiss and snowmen chill it, before the creatures fire themselves from cannons to celebrate its exit into the real world. Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam made it with the animation studio Psyop, directed by Todd Mueller and Kylie Matulick, to launch Coke's global “Coke Side of Life” campaign. It is studied as the point where a CG brand world was built like an entertainment franchise. Stash reported it was the highest-rated global spot the Coca-Cola Company had ever tested, and it spawned a three-and-a-half-minute sequel, “Happiness Factory: The Movie”, premiered in Second Life in 2007 and later named by Adweek's AdFreak among the most epic commercials ever made. The original took a One Show merit award.
