This Is Your Brain on Drugs ("Fried Egg")
Partnership for a Drug-Free America1987
This Is Your Brain on Drugs ("Fried Egg") is a 1987 public service announcement for Partnership for a Drug-Free America, created by Keye/Donna/Pearlstein, Los Angeles.
The line
This is your brain. This is drugs. This is your brain on drugs. Any questions?
Why it works
Ten seconds of visual rhetoric that defined a decade: an egg ("this is your brain"), a hot pan ("this is drugs"), the sizzle ("this is your brain on drugs"), and the era's most quoted closing line — "Any questions?" Created in 1987 by LA agency Keye/Donna/Pearlstein for the ad industry's volunteer anti-drug coalition, it became the most remembered PSA of the 1980s and ranked among TV Guide's greatest commercials. It is studied for pure metaphor economy — a product demonstration structure applied to a public-health message — and for its contested legacy: endlessly parodied, criticized by researchers as fear-based oversimplification, and yet permanently lodged in the language. The Drum lists it among the most influential commercials ever made; its structure is quoted every time anyone holds up two objects and draws an analogy.
Techniques
- Fear appeal Equates drug use with a brain frying like an egg in a hot pan, a blunt threat to health delivered in seconds.
- Demonstration Borrows the structure of a product demonstration, holding up an egg, a pan and the result, so the metaphor proves itself on screen.
