The line

Surf ki kharidari mein hi samajhdari hai

Why it works

In a busy market a housewife in a crisp white sari haggles with a vegetable seller over a few rupees. Asked by an off-screen voice why so careful a shopper pays more for Surf, she explains the difference between a cheap product and a good one, then taps her head: "Surf ki kharidari mein hi samajhdari hai" (buying Surf is the sensible choice). Nirma was selling at Rs 7 a kilo against Surf's Rs 28 and racing ahead, and Lintas's research unit found Surf users still felt they got more value, so instead of cutting the price the agency defended it, through a shrewd, unsentimental homemaker rather than the doting mothers of the day. Kaveta Chaudhry, cast after about a hundred screen tests, asked to play the scene as a bargaining session. Rushed onto television during the 1984 Olympics, the stopgap spot ran for 18 months, was made in 16 languages and posted Lever's highest day-after recall; the account team says it revived Surf's growth and checked Nirma's.

Techniques

  • Logos A careful shopper explains the difference between a cheap product and a good one, arguing that the pricier powder is the sensible buy.
  • Plain folks Set in a busy market, a thrifty homemaker haggling over vegetables gives the argument the voice of an ordinary, shrewd customer.
  • Card stacking Defends the higher price instead of cutting it, recasting the gap with a much cheaper rival as proof of better value.
