Not Happy, Jan!
Yellow Pages (Sensis)2000
Not Happy, Jan! is a 2000 30-second television commercial for Yellow Pages, created by Clemenger BBDO Melbourne.
Why it works
A businesswoman discovers that her employee, Jan, has forgotten to book the company's advertisement in the new Yellow Pages, so the business will miss the next edition. Jan flees the office; her boss struggles to stay composed, then throws open a window and bellows after her: “Not happy, Jan!” Made by Clemenger BBDO Melbourne, the spot was never meant as a consumer ad at all but as a reminder to small-business advertisers about the directory's closing date. Actor Deborah Kennedy's furious delivery, ad-libbed on the day of the shoot, turned the line into instant Australian vernacular, and it is studied as the rare commercial whose catchphrase escaped completely into the language: by 2004 it had been reworked into “Not Happy, John!”, the title of a book and a campaign against Prime Minister John Howard. It won no major awards at the time, yet in 2023 the Australian public voted it the country's greatest ad.
