What Happens Here, Stays Here
Las Vegas (LVCVA)2003
What Happens Here, Stays Here is a 2003 television campaign and destination slogan for Las Vegas, created by R&R Partners, Las Vegas.
The line
What happens here, stays here.
Why it works
The most successful destination slogan ever written — and a masterclass in selling an emotional truth instead of attractions. After Las Vegas's family-friendly repositioning flopped, R&R Partners' research landed on what visitors actually bought: adult freedom, the permission to be someone else for a weekend. The "Vegas Stories" ads never showed casinos; they showed the secrets people brought home. The NFL's refusal to air the launch spot during the 2003 Super Bowl generated a reported $6.7 million in free publicity, and the phrase — in its "what happens in Vegas..." form — became genuine American idiom, quoted by a First Lady on national television. It is studied for emotional-truth positioning and as evidence that a tourism brand can be built on discretion rather than imagery.
Techniques
- Pathos Sells the thrill of adult freedom, the permission to be someone else for a weekend, rather than casinos or attractions.
- Storytelling Its vignettes hint at the secrets visitors carry home without ever showing a casino, letting implied stories do the selling.
