The line
Sometimes, child abuse is only visible to the child suffering it.
Why it works
A street poster with a second, hidden audience. Spain's ANAR Foundation runs the children's helpline 116 111, and its problem was reaching a child who might be standing next to the abuser. Grey Spain printed a lenticular poster whose picture changes with the viewer's height. An adult sees a child's face and the line "Sometimes, child abuse is only visible to the child suffering it." A child under about ten, looking from lower down, sees the same face bruised and bleeding, the words "If somebody hurts you, phone us and we'll help you," and the number. The offer of help can be read without the accompanying adult ever knowing it was made. It is studied as a sharp case of the medium doing the targeting: the printing technique itself decides who receives the call to action. Launched around the International Day Against Child Abuse in 2013, its case video drew almost four million YouTube views in two weeks, UPI reported.
Techniques
- Purpose and cause A lenticular poster lets a child, looking from lower down, see a helpline number and offer of help that the accompanying adult cannot see.
- Pathos Adults see a child's face and a line about hidden abuse, while children see the same face bruised and bleeding, making the danger viscerally felt.
